March For Our Lives

This past Saturday, March 24 was our local #MarchForOurLives, and it was a great success! We were expecting maybe 30-40 people, but we had over a hundred enthusiastic marchers turn out to demand common sense gun reform.

The Mayor of Elizabeth City, the Hon. Bettie Parker, and Pasquotank County Commissioners Jordan and Winslow were in attendance and the Elizabeth City Police Department did a great job escorting us on our march downtown.

We collected over a hundred signatures on the March For Our Lives petition, which asks lawmakers to improve current gun safety legislation by 1) banning the sale of assault weapons like the AR-15; 2) prohibiting the sale of high-capacity magazines; and 3) closing the loopholes in our current background check system, like the "gun show loophole".

The mood was positive and determined as marchers raised their signs and their voices on the trek from Mariner's Wharf Park and around downtown Elizabeth City.

NENC Progressives will be presenting copies of the petition and signatures to our City Council, County Commissioners, Governor Cooper, and our Congressional representatives, and urging them to listen to their constituents and enact stronger regulations for gun safety.
